This seal sits between the body and engine tin on your Air-Cooled Vanagon, sealing off hot exhaust air from the engine bay. It's one of the most important parts of the air-cooled cooling system — without it, your engine ingests its own hot exhaust air and will overheat.

Why this matters: Air-cooled engines are actually oil-cooled and depend on cool incoming air. If the engine bay seal is deteriorated, hot exhaust air recirculates into the cooling intake — leading to overheating, dropped valves, and burned pistons.
